Description:
Climate change is causing rising temperatures and more frequent heatwaves and has reduced global food security and impacted individual livelihoods, hindering efforts to meet the Sustainable Development Goals. Recognizing the adaptation and mitigation benefits of sustainable cooling, the COP28 Presidency of the United Arab Emirates is spearheading the Global Cooling Pledge with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) led Cool Coalition as a delivery partner.
The Pledge will be launched on 5 December at COP28 in Dubai with the COP28 President-Designate, Ministers, Finance Institutions, Private Sector and International Organizations. This Pledge intends to raise ambition and international cooperation through collective targets for reducing emissions, improving energy efficiency and climate-friendly approaches to cooling, and increasing access to sustainable cooling for the vulnerable.
📢 Join the Pledge:
- For National Government Participants of the Pledge: Please note that endorsements should be transmitted via Note Verbale to the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs with a copy to: climatetf@mofa.gov.ae ; mikael.melin@cop28.com; and lily.riahi@un.org by November 29th. An example letter of support is enclosed at this link.
- For Subnational Government Participants of the Pledge: A select number of cities are being invited to join as City Champions of the Subnational Commitments to the Global Cooling Pledge. This will be opened to all cities in the run-up to UNEA-6 next year. If your cities are interested in joining, please contact unep-coolcoalition@un.org.
- For Non-state Actor Supporters of the Pledge: The Pledge also recognizes the essential roles that private sector, development banks, financial institutions and philanthropy play to support implementation of the Pledge and welcomes their efforts and engagement. We cordially invite you to endorse and support the Global Cooling Pledge by November 29th, 2023. Endorsements should be submitted by an Official Letter emailed to mikael.melin@cop28.com and unep-coolcoalition@un.org. An example letter of support is enclosed at this link.
