The Cool Coalition Secretariat and partners are hosting and joining multiple events at the 2022 UN Climate Change Conference (COP27).
COP27 will take place from the 6th to the 18th of November 2022. COP stands for Conference of the Parties. Parties are the signatories of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) – a treaty agreed in 1994 which has 197 Parties (196 countries and the EU). Egypt will host the 27th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh, with a view to building on previous successes and paving the way for future ambition. A golden opportunity for all stakeholders to rise to the occasion and tackle effectively the global challenge of climate change facilitated by Egypt on the African continent.
United Nations climate change conferences are among the largest international meetings in the world. The COP27 summit will bring parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
You can follow the Cool Coalition’s collective mobilization and advocacy at COP27 virtually from everywhere you are. A preliminary list of Cool Coalition events is available below.

Beating the Heat: Accelerating Access to Sustainable Climate Solutions in Cities
Date: Tuesday 15th November 2022 Time: 13:30 – 16:30 pm EET Running Time: 180 mins
Hosted by: UNEP Cool Coalition, RMI, SEforALL, WWF Location: Buildings Pavilion
Context: Cooling in a warming world has become an adaptation imperative. Countries across the globe have witnessed record high temperatures in 2022. By 2030, heat stress will reduce the world’s GDP by $2.4 trillion. By 2050 between 50%-75% of the global population will be exposed to life-threatening extreme heat and humidity due to climate change. By 2100, cities across the world could warm by 4.4°C, exposing the world’s growing urban population to conditions that will damage human health, productivity, and quality of life. To achieve the goal to Resilience Breakthroughs on human settlements, we need to ensure access to thermal comfort, but we cannot just air condition our way out of the extreme heat challenge. We must take a comprehensive, whole-systems approach to cool cities, without warming the planet. These include establishing policy to provide heat resilient housing, increase access to finance to develop safer homes and cities, establish heat mapping and early warning systems for heatwaves, and leverage nature-based solutions to cool down our urban communities. Solutions exist, but they need to be tailored to local contexts, invested in, and implemented in an accelerated way. This Lab will highlight positive examples of urban cooling approaches to date and enable a discussion on how to scale action between now and 2030 to build resilience to extreme heat in cities across the globe.

Context: Our cities are getting hotter. Nature can help reduce urban temperatures and increase thermal comfort for urban dwellers. The cooling benefits of nature-based solutions are well documented, but they need to be better understood and leveraged to increase implementation and bring about change at a global level. The “Beat the Heat: Nature for Cool Cities Challenge” seeks to catalyze NbS implementation by asking participants to pledge to increase NbS implementation in their urban areas by 2030 and demonstrate tangible progress by 2024. Participants will be asked to commit to at least one qualitative goal and three implementation actions to back their pledge
