Background

As temperatures rise and demand for cooling grows, Somalia is advancing efforts to integrate sustainable cooling into its national climate and development priorities. This session will trace the country’s journey from cooling-related commitments under its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the Global Cooling Pledge to the development of its National Cooling Action Plan (NCAP). Under the support from UNEP, Somalia is developing its NCAP. The side event will also share the experiences, challenges, and lessons learned during this procedure. And how these learning can be used for the NCAP development in the nearby regions.

Building on these presentations, a panel discussion introduced by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) will explore how the emerging BeCool Africa programme, developed in partnership with UNEP, could help translate national cooling priorities into action. Perspectives from Somalia and Djibouti will inform discussion of national implementation priorities, regional cooperation, equitable access to sustainable cooling, emissions reductions, climate-resilient livelihoods and green economic development across the Horn of Africa.
