The Beat the Heat online training on local heat action is the first capacity-building activity delivered under the Beat the Heat implementation drive, following the initiative’s launch at COP30 in Belém. Led by Arup, this foundational training introduces a practical framework to help cities understand, assess, and respond to extreme heat, with a focus on early-stage action and implementation.
This training is designed for city officials, planners, and practitioners who are:
Considering undertaking a heat assessment.
Developing or updating a local heat action plan.
Seeking clarity on the key steps, data, and decisions involved in addressing urban heat risks.
The training presents a structured framework for local heat action across three stages:
Analyse – exploring the data, analytical methodologies and tools available to better understand patterns of extreme heat in cities and neighbourhoods.
Assess – discussing methods for assessing present-day and future heat impacts and risks in cities, including consideration of heat vulnerability.
Act – Examining heat action planning, including investment cases for adaptation and cost–benefit analyses, and highlighting design solutions at building, neighbourhood, and city scales.
